The Importance of Fertile Soil

95% of everything we eat comes directly or indirectly from the soil, yet soil is a finite resource that is being rapidly depleted. Healthy soils are fundamental for biosystem functioning, landscape regeneration and sustainable food and fibre production.

It takes 2000 years to produce just 10cm of fertile soil. We deplete that in just 2 years. On average we lose 24 billion tonnes of fertile soil per year.

For the past 10,000 and particularly the past 100 years, we have drastically compromised soil health for yield and profitability;

  • * mined and degraded soils and natural resources from our land and ocean
  • * cleared 75% of the earth’s primary forests
  • * created over 4 billion hectares of man-made deserts
  • * applied ever increasing amounts of chemical fertiliser particularly in monoculture farming enterprises, and,
  • * in the process, used 150% of the sustainable resources of the planet.
